Today’s ride: 44:43 Distance 10.67 Miles Average: 87 RPM
I’m back. I’ve got a new daughter-in-law, I’m babysitting a rat-dog, I’m buying a house, someone stole my TV, but I’m back. Sticking my ass in the saddle was probably the best thing that happened to me today. Probably because it was the simplest thing I did. There’s not a lot of grey area on a bike. Either you’re pedaling or your not.
There was actually more non-pedaling than usual on today’s ride–mostly because of the route I took and the time I took it. I chose a path with two relatively steep inclines and two relatively long declines on purpose. It had been thirteen days since I rode, and I didn’t want to overdo it.* About 4 of the 10 miles was on the Erie Canal path, but the bulk of the ride was on some rather busy roads, which meant a few stop lights. I considered not counting the time I spent not pedaling, but then it wouldn’t really be a true accounting, would it?
These are the little victories in my life, by the way–the times when I tell the truth when no one else would really know or even care whether I did or not. These are the instances where I’m certain that in at least part of my life, I’m doing the right thing.
I was pleased that I didn’t lose much in the way of strength or endurance during the vacation, but I’m more convinced than ever that it’s time to step things up. This will entail spending money that I don’t have, for things that I’m going to need–like a trainer over the winter. I’m considering selling ‘Uphill Rider’ T-shirts on the web. Would there be any interest in those? What other money-generating ideas are out there?

*Actually, I did an hour on a stationary bike in Gettysburg last Tuesday, but I’m not really counting that.
